Roof Moss Removal and Treatment

Roof moss removal is for roofs where moss has grown thick enough to lift tile edges, shed clumps onto paths and fill the gutters. OOR External removes the loose growth with care, clears what falls into the gutters and can follow up with a biocide treatment.

Professional Roof Moss Removal

Moss is the most visible roof problem, and also the one most likely to be handled badly. Blasting a tiled roof with a jet washer can force water under the tiles and damage the surface, so moss removal here is a controlled, hands-on job. Jordan Sartain checks the covering, pitch, condition and access first, then explains how the moss will come off and what aftercare is suggested. This page covers the moss service itself; the wider roof cleaning page deals with lichen, staining and different roof types.

  • Roof checked before any moss is removed
  • Loose growth taken off with care, not blasted
  • Gutters cleared of fallen moss afterwards
  • Biocide offered as a separate line

How moss comes off the roof

Thick cushions of moss are lifted from the tiles by hand tools rather than force, working down the slope so the debris falls towards the gutter. The aim is to clear the growth without cracking tiles or disturbing the ridge. Once the bulk is gone, what remains is the fine growth and spores in the tile texture, which is where treatment comes in.

Treating the roof after removal

A biocide treatment applied after the moss is removed kills the remaining spores so the roof stays clearer for longer. It is offered as a separate line, so you can choose it with the removal or leave it. The treatment works over time rather than instantly, and that is explained when it is recommended.

Gutters at the end of the job

Moss removed from a roof has to go somewhere, and most of it lands in the gutters. They are cleared after the roof work so the downpipes are not left blocked. If the gutters were already overflowing, that is a sign the roof was shedding moss for some time.

Is it time to remove the moss?

A light green tint is mostly cosmetic. The case for removal is stronger when moss is pushing under tile edges, clumps are landing on the ground, or the gutters keep filling. The guides below explain why moss grows and what affects the cost.

Which roofs moss removal suits

Concrete interlocking tiles carry the heaviest moss, because their rough face holds moisture. Clay tiles and slate grow less but are more brittle, so the work is slower and lighter. On coated metal sheeting, moss is less common and a low-pressure soft wash usually suits it better. Fibre cement sheets and roof lights are fragile and assessed carefully before anything is agreed. If your roof is one where moss removal would do more harm than good, you will be told so.

Booking roof moss removal

Send your postcode and a few photographs of each slope, taken safely from the ground or an upstairs window. Mention anything below the roof, such as a conservatory or a parked car, and any access limits. Jordan will reply with the recommended approach, whether biocide is suggested and a free written quote. Homes and commercial roofs are both covered.

Roof Moss Removal FAQs

What removes moss from a roof?
Careful physical removal takes off the thick growth, and a biocide treatment afterwards kills what is left in the tile texture. Shop-bought moss killer can help with light growth but does not lift established cushions.
What should I do about moss on my roof?
Watch for moss lifting tile edges, clumps falling and gutters filling. If those are happening, have the roof looked at. If it is only a light tint, it may not be worth disturbing yet.
Do you scrape moss off roofs?
Thick moss is lifted with hand tools, working carefully down the slope. Heavy scraping or jet washing is avoided because it can damage tiles.
Will the moss grow back?
Spores stay on any roof, so some regrowth is natural over time. Biocide treatment after removal slows it, and shaded slopes tend to regrow first.
