Indian Sandstone Cleaning for Patios and Paths

Indian sandstone cleaning needs more care than concrete paving. The stone is natural, porous and softer than it looks, with a riven surface that holds dirt, algae and the black lichen spots that so many sandstone patios develop. The aim is to lift growth and staining without etching the surface or washing out the joints.

Professional Indian Sandstone Cleaning

Sandstone varies a great deal. Colours range from buff and grey to the mixed tones of Raj Green and Kandla Grey, and some slabs are calibrated and smooth while others are hand-split and uneven. Each patio is assessed for the stone, its condition and the joints before a method is agreed. Pressure is set low for natural stone, and treatment is given time to work rather than relying on force.

  • Low pressure for natural stone
  • Black spot treated, not blasted
  • Joints and pointing checked first
  • Existing finishes assessed first

How do you clean Indian sandstone?

Start gentle. Loose debris is swept away and joints checked. Surface dirt and green algae are lifted with controlled pressure suited to the stone, using a rotary surface cleaner where the slabs allow so water is spread evenly rather than concentrated in one spot. A treatment for organic growth is applied and allowed to dwell, then rinsed. Black lichen spots respond slowly and may fade over the following weeks rather than disappearing on the day.

Harsh acids, undiluted bleach and a narrow jet held close to the surface can all damage sandstone. They may leave pale patches, etching or rust-coloured marks where iron in the stone reacts. That is why a careful, staged approach is used.

Black spot on sandstone patios

The small black dots that spread across sandstone are usually lichen, not dirt. They anchor into the surface, so pressure alone rarely removes them and can roughen the stone in the attempt. A treatment applied and left to work is the usual approach. The black spots guide explains what they are and why they return.

Joints and pointing

Sandstone patios are often pointed with mortar or a resin jointing compound rather than sand. Pointing in poor condition can crack or wash out under pressure, so its state is checked before cleaning. If pointing is loose, it is pointed out so you can arrange repairs; cleaning does not replace failed jointing.

Indian sandstone aftercare

After cleaning, keep sandstone clear of fallen leaves and check that drainage channels remain open. Existing coatings should be identified before washing so the cleaning method respects the finish. The patio cleaning page explains care for the surrounding paving. Check shaded corners separately from open slabs, as damp areas can develop growth sooner. Avoid abrasive tools on the stone when removing ordinary garden debris.

Booking a sandstone clean

Send photographs of the patio in daylight, close-ups of any black spots and a view of the joints. Mention the stone type if you know it and whether it has been sealed before. Tell us about plants, ponds and drains nearby, as runoff and treatment are planned around them. Quotes are free.

Indian Sandstone Cleaning FAQs

How do you clean Indian sandstone?
With controlled low pressure, a treatment for organic growth given time to work and a gentle rinse. Avoid harsh acids, bleach and a narrow jet held close to the stone.
Can pressure washing damage Indian sandstone?
Yes, if the pressure is too high or the jet too close. It can etch the surface and wash out pointing, which is why pressure is kept low.
Why has my sandstone gone orange after cleaning?
Some sandstone contains iron that can react with certain chemicals. Using suitable products and a staged approach reduces that risk.
