Debris hides faults. A gutter packed with moss and silt can look sound from the ground, then reveal a split union or a missing clip once it is empty. Clearing first lets the run be checked properly and lets water be run through it to show where it escapes.
Testing with water is the useful part. A joint that only weeps in heavy rain may be invisible on a dry day, while a deliberate flow along the channel shows whether the fall carries water to the outlet or leaves it standing in the middle of the run.
Plastic gutters are usually connected by unions with rubber seals. Over time those seals harden, shift or collect grit, and a steady drip appears at the same point each time it rains. Many of these can be cleaned and resealed or have the seal reseated rather than replacing the section.
Where the union itself is cracked or the gutter ends no longer meet, a reseal will not hold for long. In that case you will be told plainly, and replacing that component is discussed as a separate item with its own price.
Brackets hold the gutter at the correct line. A loose screw, a snapped clip or rotten timber behind the bracket allows the run to drop. Refitting a bracket into sound fascia can restore support, and an extra bracket may help where spacing has been stretched.
If the fascia board behind is soft, fixing into it will not be secure. That is a joinery or roofline matter rather than a cleaning task, and it is noted so the right trade can look at it before the gutter is relied upon.
A gutter needs a gentle fall towards its outlet. When a run sags, water collects in the low point, silt settles there and the overflow comes back sooner. Realigning brackets to restore the fall is a common minor adjustment once the channel is empty.
Long runs on older houses sometimes have several faults together: a sag, a leaking joint and a blocked outlet. Each is listed so you can see what was cleared, what was adjusted and what remains outside the scope of the visit.
Full gutter replacement, new downpipe systems, fascia renewal and any work on the roof covering are not part of a clean and repair visit. Where those are needed, a quotation follows inspection or a suitable trade is suggested. No repair is described as permanent, and no guarantee is offered on ageing systems.
For a free quote, send your postcode and photographs of the drip, sag or overflow taken from the ground. Mention whether the problem appears in all rain or only in heavy downpours, as that helps judge whether the cause is debris, a joint or the fall.
