Roof Cleaning in Folkestone

Folkestone roofs take a battering from damp sea air, and moss, lichen and black streaks build up faster on the shaded slopes. OOR External cleans them from its nearby Dover base, choosing a method for the roof covering, then treating it with biocide and clearing the gutters before leaving.

Roof cleaning in Folkestone and Hythe

Folkestone and the surrounding district are close to Dover and part of the local working area for homes and businesses alike. Hythe and the villages inland are covered on the same basis, so a roof job here does not need to be stretched into a long day.

Why growth builds up on the coast

Sea air keeps roofs damp for longer, and damp is what moss, lichen and algae need. North-facing slopes that rarely see the sun stay wet for days after rain, and roofs shaded by trees or taller neighbours are worse again. Lichen in particular does well in clean coastal air, spreading in flat grey and yellow patches across the tiles.

Black streaks running down a slope are usually algae. They are mainly cosmetic, but they are often the first sign that heavier growth will follow.

Victorian slate and modern tiles

Folkestone expanded west as a resort after the railway arrived in 1843, under the Earl of Radnor and Decimus Burton's plan, so much of the older town is Victorian and Edwardian, with slate roofs on tall terraces and villas. Slate is thin and can be brittle with age, so it needs a light touch and careful access. Modern concrete tiles on newer homes have a rougher face that holds moss in every joint but can take careful removal. That is why the method changes from house to house: the covering, pitch, condition and access are checked first, and the approach is explained before anything is agreed.

What happens on the day

Paths, plants and anything below the roofline are considered before work starts. Growth is removed with the agreed method, working down the slope so material falls towards the gutters rather than across clean tiles. Loosened moss and debris are then cleared from the gutters and downpipes and bagged, so you are not left with clumps on the patio.

  • Moss and loose growth removed
  • Gutters and downpipes cleared
  • Biocide applied if agreed

Biocide treatment and when to recheck

A biocide treatment applied after the clean kills the spores left in the tile texture, so regrowth is slower. It works over time: treated lichen and algae fade gradually as the weather washes them off. On a coastal roof it is worth a look every so often from the ground, and keeping the gutters clear helps the roof dry out.

Check the sheltered slope as well as the sea-facing side

When looking at a Folkestone roof, do not judge every slope by the one visible from the road. The rear face of a coastal terrace may receive less sunlight and retain growth even when the frontage looks fairly clear. Take an overall photograph from any safely accessible garden position and identify which side you are showing. Avoid climbing onto an extension to obtain a better angle.

On older slate, make the covering clear in the enquiry rather than describing all roof pieces as tiles. For a newer tiled roof, show where moss concentrates near the eaves and whether detached pieces reach the paths. Mention neighbouring buildings or planting that restrict the view or access. This gives Jordan a basis for discussing the roof itself, the collection of loosened debris and whether treatment is appropriate, without assuming sea exposure affects every property identically.

Roof cleaning in Folkestone: questions

Does sea air make roof moss worse?
It can. Damp coastal air keeps roofs wet for longer, which suits moss, lichen and algae, especially on north-facing and shaded slopes.
Will you need to walk on my roof?
That depends on the roof and the access. The covering, pitch and condition are checked first, and the way the roof will be reached is explained before work is agreed.
What happens to the moss you remove?
It is cleared from the gutters and downpipes at the end of the job and taken away, rather than left to block the drainage or sit on paths.
How soon will the roof look clean after biocide?
Not instantly. Treated growth dies back and fades gradually as rain and weather wash it away over the following weeks and months.
Do you cover Hythe as well?
Yes. Hythe is close to Folkestone and within the local area covered from the Dover base, for homes and businesses.
