Pebbledash Cleaning for Textured Walls

Pebbledash cleaning deals with the green algae, black streaks and grime that settle into the rough, stony surface of a pebbledash wall. The texture that makes pebbledash hard-wearing also makes it hold dirt, and the small stones can be knocked loose by careless cleaning, so the approach has to be gentle.

Professional Pebbledash Cleaning

Pebbledash is a render finish with small stones thrown onto the wet coat so they bond into it. Over time, the stones and the render between them collect organic growth, especially on shaded sides of the house. A high-pressure jet can blast stones out and leave bald patches that are difficult to repair to match. Soft washing applies a treatment at low pressure, gives it time to work into the texture and rinses gently.

  • Low pressure protects loose stones
  • Treatment works into the texture
  • Painted pebbledash handled carefully
  • Biocide offered to slow regrowth

How do you clean pebbledash?

First the wall is checked for loose stones, cracks and hollow areas, as these show where the render has started to fail. A treatment for organic growth is applied at low pressure so it reaches into every gap between the stones. It is given dwell time to break down the algae and lichen, then rinsed at low pressure. Stubborn black streaks may need a second application.

Scrubbing pebbledash with a stiff brush loosens stones, and pressure washing pebble dash walls at high pressure risks the same damage on a larger scale.

Cleaning a pebbledash house

When cleaning a pebble dash house, the sides facing away from the sun usually carry the heaviest growth, with streaks under windows and below gutters. Fascias, soffits and uPVC frames are often cleaned at the same visit so the whole house looks even. Plants, paths and windows below are protected before treatment.

Painted pebbledash

Many pebbledash walls have been painted with masonry paint at some point. Paint changes how the wall should be cleaned, because a strong treatment or too much pressure can lift flaking paint. Tell us if the wall has been painted and whether the paint is peeling. Cleaning a sound painted surface is straightforward; cleaning flaking paint can reveal how much is loose.

Pebbledash, render and K Rend

Pebbledash is one of several render finishes. Smooth sand and cement render and coloured through-coloured renders such as K Rend each need their own care. If your house has more than one finish, each is treated on its own terms within the same visit.

Keeping pebbledash clean

Green growth returns where walls stay damp. Fixing a leaking gutter, cutting back plants that touch the wall and keeping drainage clear all help. A biocide offered after cleaning slows regrowth. The algae removal guide explains the causes in more detail.

Pebble dash cleaning cost

Cost depends on the wall area, the height of the house, the amount of growth, whether the wall is painted and whether the roofline and frames are included. Send photographs of each side for a free quote. Please mention any loose, cracked or missing stones you have noticed, as repairs are a separate job from cleaning and need a plasterer or renderer.

Pebbledash Cleaning FAQs

How do you clean pebbledash?
Apply a treatment for organic growth at low pressure, let it work into the texture and rinse gently. Avoid high pressure and stiff brushes, which loosen stones.
Can pressure washing damage pebbledash?
Yes. High pressure can blast stones out of the render and leave bald patches that are hard to repair to match.
Can painted pebbledash be cleaned?
Yes, if the paint is sound. Flaking paint may lift during cleaning, so mention its condition when you enquire.
