Brickwork Cleaning for Homes and Buildings

Brickwork cleaning removes the green algae, black staining, traffic film and general grime that build up on brick walls over the years. This page describes the service generally. The right method depends on the brick, the condition of the mortar and what is on the surface, so every wall is assessed before anything is agreed.

Professional Brick Cleaning

Brick looks hard-wearing, but the face of a brick is its protective skin and the mortar between bricks is softer still. Cleaning that is too aggressive can strip the face, open up the joints and leave a wall more prone to damp and staining than before. Low-pressure washing, a treatment given time to work are the usual options. Ask about brick cleaning when you send your photographs and Jordan will explain what suits the wall.

Can you clean brick without damaging it?

Yes, with the right approach. Soft, handmade and older bricks need far gentler treatment than modern engineering bricks. Mortar that is crumbling or recessed can wash out under pressure. A small test area shows how the brick and mortar respond before the whole wall is cleaned, and the method is adjusted if needed.

Pressure washing brick is possible on sound, hard brick with firm joints, but a narrow jet held close to the surface is avoided. Organic growth responds better to treatment and dwell time than to force.

Common staining on brick walls

Green algae grows on shaded and north-facing brickwork and under leaking gutters. Black staining forms below sills and copings where water runs off. Traffic film darkens walls beside busy roads. White salt deposits, called efflorescence, appear when moisture moving through the wall leaves minerals on the surface. Each has a different cause, and the guide to algae removal on walls explains the organic growth in more detail.

Low-pressure cleaning for brick

Low-pressure washing and a compatible treatment given time to work are considered after checking the brick and mortar. A test area helps establish how the wall responds, especially where the bricks are soft or the joints are worn.

Brick cleaning and repointing

Brick cleaning and repointing are often searched together, but they are different trades. OOR External cleans brickwork; it does not repoint. If cleaning reveals loose, cracked or missing mortar, that is pointed out so you can arrange a builder. In some cases it makes sense to repoint first and clean afterwards, so fresh joints are not exposed to washing.

Brick, render and the wider building

Many homes mix brick with rendered panels, and commercial buildings often combine brick with cladding. The render cleaning page covers rendered walls, and external building cleaning brings several surfaces into one scope.

What affects brick cleaning cost

Brick cleaning cost depends on the wall area, height and access, the type of staining, the condition of the brick and mortar and the method chosen. Repeated treatment take longer than a simple wash, so the method does affect the price. Send photographs of the whole wall and close-ups of the brick and joints for a free quotation.
