Why do gutters overflow?
Water spills over a gutter when it arrives faster than it can drain. A blocked outlet or downpipe is the most common reason: water backs up behind the blockage until it pours over the edge. A gutter that has dropped out of level can hold water at a low point, and a joint that has opened may leak rather than overflow.
Less often, the gutter itself is undersized for the roof area, or a valley concentrates water onto one short section. These are design issues rather than cleaning ones, and they are worth recognising early.
What causes blocked gutters
Leaves from nearby trees, moss falling from the roof, silt from weathered tiles and nesting material all build up over time. In dry weather this debris settles and packs down. When rain arrives, it turns into sludge that sits at the outlet. Roofs with heavy moss feed the gutter continuously, so the blockage returns quickly unless the roof is dealt with too.
- Leaves and seeds from overhanging trees
- Moss and lichen washed from the roof
- Silt and grit from older tiles
- Nesting material from birds
- Balls, toys and wind-blown litter
Gutter overflowing in heavy rain only
If a gutter copes in normal rain but overflows in a downpour, it may be partly blocked rather than fully blocked. A thin layer of silt along the base reduces capacity without stopping flow. It may also simply be a very heavy storm. Watch where the water spills: one spot near an outlet suggests a blockage, while water spilling along the whole length suggests capacity or a fall in the wrong direction.
Blocked gutter damage
Overflowing water runs down the wall instead of into the drain. Over time it can stain render and brick, encourage green algae, wash out mortar and soak into the wall. Water dripping at the base can splash back onto the wall and pool against the foundations. Fascias and soffits can be affected where water sits behind the gutter.
Damp inside is not always caused by a gutter, but a wet patch on an inside wall below an overflowing run is a strong clue. Dealing with the gutter is a sensible first step before looking at other causes.
Gutter guards and covers
Mesh guards, brushes and foam inserts are sold to keep leaves out of gutters. They can help in some situations, but fine debris such as silt and moss fragments still gets through, and guards themselves can trap leaves on top. They also make gutters harder to inspect and clear. If you already have guards fitted, mention them, because they need to be removed or worked around during clearance.
What you can check safely
Stay on the ground. During rain, note where water spills and whether the downpipe below is flowing. In dry weather, look for plants growing out of the gutter, a run that dips visibly or a downpipe that has come away from the wall. Photographs of these points are more useful than climbing a ladder to look inside.
Need it sorted? Book gutter cleaning
Gutter cleaning clears debris from the channel, usually from the ground with high-reach vacuum equipment where access allows. If the blockage is in a downpipe or swan neck, the blocked gutters and downpipes service deals with that point. Send photographs and a note of where water spills, and request a free quote using the form below.
If you want to avoid the problem returning, the guide on how often gutters should be cleaned helps you judge the right interval for your property.
