How Often Should Gutters Be Cleaned?

Written by Jordan Sartain, owner of OOR External

Last updated:

There is no single answer to how often gutters should be cleaned. A house in open ground with a clean roof might go a long time between clears, while one under mature trees may fill every autumn. The useful approach is to understand what feeds your gutters and to watch for the signs that they are filling.

What decides the interval

The biggest factor is what lands in the gutter. Overhanging trees drop leaves, seeds and twigs, and some species shed something in almost every season. A mossy roof sheds clumps into the channel in dry spells. Older tiles release grit. Birds nesting on the roof add material too. The more of these apply, the sooner a gutter fills.

Gutter shape and position also play a part. Shallow profiles fill faster than deep ones, and runs with few outlets carry more water past each blockage point.

  • Trees within reach of the roof
  • Moss or lichen on the roof
  • Age and type of roof covering
  • Birds nesting nearby
  • Gutter profile and number of outlets

Do gutters need cleaning every year?

Not always. Many homes benefit from an annual check, especially after the leaves have fallen, but a property with no nearby trees and a clean roof may need clearing less often. On the other hand, a house surrounded by trees may need attention more than once a year. Treat a year as a starting point and adjust once you know how quickly your gutters fill.

Best time of year to clear gutters

Late autumn, once most leaves have fallen, is a common choice because it prepares the gutters for winter rain. Clearing too early can mean a second fill before the leaves have finished dropping. If the roof is being cleaned, the gutters are cleared after the roof work, so plan the two together.

Coastal and exposed properties

In East Kent, coastal homes may see less leaf fall but more wind-blown debris, sand and salt residue. Exposed roofs can also grow moss on the sheltered slope. Those conditions still fill gutters over time, just with different material. Watching the outlets after storms is a good habit.

Commercial and managed buildings

For managed blocks, schools and commercial units, a planned schedule is often easier to manage than reacting to overflow. Flat roofs and box gutters can block quietly, with water finding its way inside before anyone sees it spill. A regular visit with outlets checked is part of normal building upkeep, and the interval can be agreed for each site.

Keeping a simple record

Noting the date each time the gutters are cleared, along with what was found, quickly shows how fast your property fills. After two or three clears you will know whether once a year is enough or whether autumn and spring visits make more sense. Photographs taken from the same spot each time make the comparison easy.

Signs it is time to book

Water spilling over the edge during rain, plants growing from the gutter, a dry downpipe while the gutter is full and stains appearing on the wall below are all signals. If you notice any of these, the overflowing gutters guide explains what may be happening. The gutter vacuuming guide shows how clearance is done from the ground.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do gutters need cleaning every year?
Many homes benefit from a yearly check, but properties without nearby trees may need clearing less often, and those under trees more often.
How often should gutters be cleaned if I have trees nearby?
Often at least once a year, usually after leaf fall, and sometimes more frequently depending on the species and how close they are.
Should gutters be cleaned after a roof clean?
Yes. Gutters and outlets are cleared after a roof clean so loosened moss does not stay at the eaves.
How do I know my gutters are filling up?
Look for water spilling during rain, plants growing from the channel and staining on the wall below the gutter line.
