Area of paving
The size of the paved area is the starting point. A small front path and step is a quick job; a large drive with side passages and a rear patio is several times the work. Measuring roughly, or sending photographs that show the whole area, helps the quotation reflect the real size.
Odd shapes, steps, edging and narrow strips take longer per square metre than open rectangles, because the surface cleaner cannot cover them as quickly.
Condition and how long since the last clean
Paving that is cleaned regularly needs less work each time. Drives left for years carry ingrained dirt, black algae, moss in every joint and sometimes compacted soil. That takes more passes, more treatment and more time to clear. Shaded areas are usually worse than sunny ones.
Stains such as oil, rust or tyre marks are a separate element. The driveway cleaning cost guide covers how stains and different drive materials affect price across all driveway types, rather than block paving alone.
Weeds and moss in joints
Weeds rooted deep in the joints are the biggest single factor on neglected block paving. They need to be cleared out, not just washed over. Heavy weed growth adds time to both the cleaning and the clean-up, as the debris is collected rather than left in the drains.
A weed treatment can be included to slow regrowth, and it is listed separately so you can choose.
Re-sanding the joints
Cleaning block paving washes out some of the sand in the joints. Re-sanding afterwards with kiln-dried sand locks the blocks together again and makes it harder for weeds to establish. On larger drives this is a significant part of the job, and the amount of sand needed varies with joint width and how much was lost.
Some people prefer to re-sand themselves to reduce cost. That can be discussed, though the sand works best brushed in once the surface is properly dry.
After the clean
Keep fallen leaves and loose debris off the paving, particularly in shaded corners. Check that drainage channels remain clear and note where water pools after rain. These observations help distinguish recurring organic growth from a drainage issue, without assuming that another wash will solve the underlying problem.
Access and logistics
Parking close to the drive, an outside tap, and whether cars can be moved out of the way on the day all affect time. Drives on steep slopes or with steps need more care with runoff. Rear patios reached only through the house need equipment carried through, which takes longer.
Waste water and debris are kept off neighbouring property and out of road drains where possible. Narrow terraced frontages may need more care than open drives.
Getting an accurate quote
Send your postcode, photographs of the whole paved area and a few close-ups of the joints, and say whether you want weed treatment and re-sanding included. A free quotation then lists each element. Domestic work is normally within about fifteen miles of Dover, with postcode checks further away.
